“Let’s dig!” was the call at the December 19 groundbreaking for the new Amelia Island Plantation community center.
With the razing of the former Property Owners Club complete, the site was set for the ceremonial start of construction of the new, two-story, 11,230-square-foot center on Sea Marsh Road. Actual construction will begin in January.
A large turnout of community members attended the celebration including Board members; members of the POC Evaluation Committee; the Community Center Construction Committee; and even some residents who had been living in Amelia Island Plantation when the now demolished POC opened in 1986.
Also attending were representatives from the Omni Resort, which graciously hosted the event at the Marsh View Grill; Basham & Lucas, which designed the community center; and Dicky Smith & Company, which was awarded the $3.26 million construction contract.
Special thanks were given to Jackye Rubin and Geoff Clear, co-chairs of the POC Evaluation Committee, for championing the construction of a modern community center to better meet the needs of AIPCA members.
The centerpiece of the new facility when it opens in 2019 will be the community “living room,” along with spacious multi-purpose rooms to host a variety of community and member events. The expansive outdoor seating area with screened porch is designed for enjoying the spectacular views of the marsh. The unfinished second floor will be used for future growth and current storage.
